A University of Salford academic is set to bring a powerful piece of European theatre to local audiences, with the world premiere of a full-length English-language production coming to MediaCity next month.
Dr Szilvi Naray, from the University of Salford, will stage a new adaptation of The Dead Man by Hungarian playwright János Háy. The production runs from 21 to 23 May at the Digital Performance Lab.
Set in the aftermath of the Second World War, the play explores the emotional fallout of conflict through the story of a woman forced to rebuild her life after her husband is presumed dead—only for him to unexpectedly return years later, disrupting everything she has become.
The new staging marks the first time the work has been performed in a full-length English version, building on earlier adaptations. It is produced through Naray’s Ignition Stage Theatre Company, which specialises in bringing Central and Eastern European drama to English-speaking audiences.
The production also highlights local creative talent, with a cast largely made up of Salford students and alumni. Original music has been composed by Professor Alan Williams.
Support for the project includes the Hungarian Consulate in Manchester, and Háy himself is expected to attend one of the performances for a post-show Q&A.
Dr Naray said the play feels “painfully, urgently relevant,” highlighting how conflict continues to reshape lives—particularly for women—making the decades-old story resonate strongly with modern audiences.
The performances are expected to draw audiences from across Salford and Greater Manchester, offering a rare opportunity to see an internationally recognised work brought to life locally.
Tickets for the performances can be purchased via Eventbrite.
