Shelagh Delaney’s A Taste of Honey Back Where It Belongs

A powerful piece of Salford’s cultural history is heading back to the stage this spring, as A Taste of Honey returns for a special in-house professional production.

Running from Wednesday 27th May to Sunday 31st May, audiences can catch evening performances at 7.30pm throughout the week, with an earlier 6pm curtain call on the Sunday.

The production will take place at Salford Arts Theatre, a much-loved local venue known for championing community and professional theatre alike. With its intimate setting and long-standing role in the city’s cultural scene, the theatre provides the perfect backdrop for a story so deeply rooted in Salford life.

Written by Salford-born playwright Shelagh Delaney, A Taste of Honey remains one of the most iconic portrayals of working-class life in post-war Britain. Set against the backdrop of 1950s Salford, the play explores the turbulent relationship between Helen and her daughter Jo, as they move from flat to flat amid a cycle of unstable relationships and emotional upheaval.

At its core, the story captures Jo’s longing for stability and affection, offering moments of warmth and humour alongside its stark realism. Her fleeting romance with Jimmie and dreams of a better future provide a fragile sense of hope in an otherwise chaotic world.

Since its debut, the play has been widely regarded as groundbreaking for its raw honesty and sharp social commentary – tackling themes that were rarely seen on stage at the time. More than 50 years on, it continues to resonate with audiences for its emotional depth and authenticity.

This latest production brings the story back to its roots, offering theatre-goers the chance to experience a true Salford classic where it belongs. Expect a moving blend of drama, wit and tenderness in a play that has stood the test of time.
