Alice Webb. CEO of MediaCityUK has called for the BBC Director-General to be based in the North, arguing it would demonstrate “real leadership” and strengthen the broadcaster’s connection to communities outside London.
Speaking on the issue, they said: “Moving the Director-General to the North would be real BBC leadership.”
She added: “If you are serious about representing the whole of the UK, then leadership should be based here, alongside the teams and communities you serve.”
The comments come amid ongoing debate about the BBC’s presence across the UK, with MediaCityUK – home to major BBC departments including Sport, Children’s and Radio 5 Live – seen as a key part of the organisation’s northern footprint.
MediaCityUK in Salford has become one of the BBC’s most important bases since operations began moving there over a decade ago. The site continues to grow as a hub for media, technology and creative industries, employing thousands of people and attracting major organisations.
Highlighting the scale of the operation in Salford, they said the BBC already has “a huge presence here, with world-class talent and production happening every day.”
Alice continued: “This isn’t about symbolism – it’s about making sure decisions are rooted in the reality of audiences across the UK.”
The call reflects wider concerns that decision-making within the BBC remains too London-centric, despite investment in regional hubs. Advocates argue that relocating senior leadership would help rebalance the organisation and better reflect audiences nationwide.
The BBC has previously pointed to its commitment to spreading jobs and investment across the country, with significant roles already based in Salford and other cities. However, the question of where its most senior leadership should be located is likely to remain a topic of debate.
