Salford is preparing to welcome residents and visitors alike this weekend as the award-winning ‘We Invented the Weekend’ festival returns to MediaCity and Salford Quays for an event packed with free activities, entertainment and experiences for all ages.
Taking place across Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June, the UK’s only festival dedicated to celebrating free time will bring together communities from across Salford, Greater Manchester and beyond for more than 200 free activities spanning music, sport, culture, wellbeing, creativity, food and family fun.
The event will once again transform MediaCity and Salford Quays into a vibrant playground of activity, with over 200 free events and experiences for all ages to enjoy with a vibrant programme featuring live performances, theatre, talks, workshops, arts and crafts, community activities, sports, wellbeing sessions, family attractions and opportunities to explore some of Salford’s most iconic cultural venues.
A highlight for 2026 includes the new “Club Culture” zone, celebrating Greater Manchester’s globally influential electronic music scene with DJ sets, workshops and discussions.
The festival celebrates a story that began in Salford more than 180 years ago. In 1843, workers’ rights campaigner Robert Lowes successfully campaigned for mill workers to have Saturday afternoons off, helping to establish what would become the modern weekend. Today, ‘We Invented the Weekend’ honours that legacy by encouraging people to make the most of their leisure time and discover new activities, interests and experiences.
Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “We are incredibly proud to host ‘We Invented the Weekend’ here in Salford, the place where the weekend was born. This unique festival celebrates our city’s remarkable contribution to working life while showcasing the creativity, culture and community spirit that make Salford such a vibrant place to live, work and visit.
“The fact that the festival is completely free ensures that everyone can take part, discover something new and enjoy quality time with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the region and beyond to experience everything Salford has to offer.”
Created by HemingwayDesign in partnership with a wide range of cultural, community and civic organisations, ‘We Invented the Weekend’ has become one of the North West’s most distinctive festivals since its launch, attracting large audiences and celebrating the importance of accessible culture and leisure opportunities.
This year’s festival also forms part of a wider celebration of Salford’s rich heritage and cultural identity, bringing together residents, visitors, artists, performers, community groups and organisations in a weekend that reflects the city’s innovation, diversity and ambition.
All activities are free to attend, although some events may require advance booking due to demand. Explore the full programme and plan your visit on the We Invented the Weekend website.
