The Jeremy Corbyn led Your Party has announced its candidate for the upcoming Barton and Winton ward by-election, set to take place on 22nd April which was triggered following the sad death of sitting councillor David Lancaster.
The By-Election was triggered by two members of the community inline with electoral policy, which unfortunately now means that voters in the ward are being asked to vote twice in as many weeks.
Kirsty Downie will stand as the Independent Your Party candidate, representing a platform centred on local issues and community-focused policies, according to the party.
The party’s platform includes proposals to increase council housing and introduce rent controls as part of efforts to address housing affordability. It also sets out ambitions to improve community safety and public transport across the area.
Further priorities outlined by the party include support for inclusive education, the protection of green spaces, and measures aimed at tackling poverty and supporting residents facing financial hardship.
Speaking about her candidacy, Kirsty Downie said:
“This is my home. I know the challenges our community faces because I live them every day. I’m standing to represent the people of Barton and Winton with honesty, compassion, and determination — and to fight for a fairer future for everyone.”
As an Independent Your Party candidate, she said her focus would be on representing local residents and ensuring decisions are made in the interests of the community.
Residents will be able to vote in the Barton and Winton ward by-election on 22 April 2026.
The Labour Party has announced its own candidate, Catherine Goodyer who is also local to the area, with the other parties expected to follow suit in the next few days.
