A man has been arrested following a police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle through Salford and Manchester.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police identified the vehicle in Salford on Thursday, June 5 after receiving information that it had been stolen earlier that morning in Lancashire and was displaying false registration plates.
When the driver failed to stop for police, specialist teams worked together to monitor the vehicle and safely direct it away from the city centre before tactical measures were deployed on Wilmslow Road to bring it to a halt.
The driver then attempted to flee on foot but was detained by officers following a short chase.
A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and failing to stop. Police also discovered he was wanted in connection with a separate burglary investigation and was subject to a recall to prison for offences committed outside Greater Manchester.
GMP said the arrest followed a coordinated response involving several policing teams, helping to minimise risk to members of the public.
PC Paul Ashworth, from GMP’s Safer Transport team, said: “This individual had no regard for the welfare and safety of other road users. He reached speeds of up to 60mph, driving through red lights, mounting the pavement and weaving dangerously around other vehicles including an ambulance on blue lights.
“This incident highlighted how forces work in conjunction and the sharing of information from neighbouring forces led to the identification of the stolen vehicle as it travelled through Greater Manchester. People who take these risks will do everything to evade capture and to evade justice.
“Officers involved in the pursuit worked together to bring the car to a safe stop by co-ordinating with teams to use the stinger. This shows our commitment to tackling dangerous driving and protecting the public.”
Greater Manchester Police said the incident demonstrates how information sharing between neighbouring forces can help identify stolen vehicles and bring offenders to justice while keeping roads safe.
