A man in his 60s has been arrested after armed police responded to reports of a person carrying a large knife in Cadishead this morning.

Greater Manchester Police were called shortly before 9am on Tuesday 2 June to reports of a man with a knife near New Moss Road and Liverpool Road.

Armed response officers attended the scene and located the suspect, who was found in possession of a large knife. Officers deployed a taser before safely detaining the man.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and remains in police custody for questioning.

GMP confirmed the incident marked the first operational deployment of the new Taser 10 device, recently introduced to frontline officers following specialist training.

Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Jones said public safety remained the force’s “absolute priority”.

He said: “Today’s incident demonstrates both the effectiveness of rapid public reporting and the professionalism of our officers in responding to a potentially dangerous situation.

“The deployment of the Taser 10 – the first incident where we have used the new technology – provided officers with a critical less-lethal option to resolve the incident safely and proportionately.”

He added that uniformed officers would remain in the area to provide reassurance to residents following the incident.
