Local Veterans were joined by Irlam and Cadishead PCSO Mark Hutton and his former PCSO colleague Paul Greenhalgh at a fantastic and fun sleepout – but with the serious aim of supporting and raising awareness of veteran homelessness.
The ‘Great Tommy Sleep Out’ organised nationally by the Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE) took place all over the country during March the challenge to spend one night, or more anywhere outdoors to support veteran homelessness.
PCSO Mark Hutton said, “You give up one night, or more, of comfort to raise awareness and in the process raise vital funds – helping provide safe homes, mental health support, and a pathway back to independence for those who once served our country.”
One night in the cold highlights the harsh reality thousands of veterans endure. With the challenge sparking conversations and alongside the fundraising, it drives real change.
Irlam FC on Silver Street kindly allowed their outside space to be used for the ‘Great Tommy Sleep Out’ with members of the Veterans Breakfast Club that meet at Irlam FC, volunteers and others enjoying the camaraderie and banter as well as a great barbecue during a night under the stars to highlight a brilliant cause.

Irlam FC players that played early in the day, supported the event that was a great success and enjoyed by the veterans and volunteers that spent the night under canvas and in the process raised over £800 for the appeal.
Amongst those supporting this national initiative was Billy Billingham MBE, SAS veteran, author and television personality, who is proudly supporting The Great Tommy Sleep Out 2026.
RBVE stands with veterans, with veteran homelessness a real issue. Thousands of ex-servicemen and women face unstable housing, mental health challenges, and isolation.
The fundraising from events like the one in Irlam and Cadishead supports RBVE’s frontline support that included Emergency accommodation, Mental health support and Employment and training.
A big ‘Well done’ to everyone that took part and supported a great initiative to help and support our veterans.
