A new padel facility could soon be coming to the University of Salford, with plans submitted to build four covered courts on land next to the David Lewis playing fields.

The proposal, lodged with Salford City Council, centres on a surface-level car park off Wallness Lane. If approved, the development would introduce dedicated courts for the fast-growing racket sport, alongside a compact clubhouse built from a repurposed shipping container. Eleven parking spaces are also included in the scheme.

The application has been brought forward by Soul Padel, which already operates sites in Stockport, St Helens and Loughborough. Planning consultancy Padel Plan is advising on the project.

University officials say the courts would form part of a wider push to modernise campus sports facilities. Earlier this year, the university launched a consultation into broader upgrades at the David Lewis playing fields, where proposals include adding a second 3G pitch and a new 2G surface, while retaining one grass pitch.

Mark Wantling, the university’s chief infrastructure officer, described the padel plans as “the first step in a major overhaul” of sports provision. He added that the facility would be open not just to students and staff, but also to local schools and community groups.

Soul Padel founder and chief executive Mark Hewlett said the company is aiming to create a space focused on community use as well as sport. “We’re building something that’s centred around community and we can’t wait to welcome people onto the courts to meet, play and connect,” he said.
