A heritage church complex in Salford could soon be demolished to make way for affordable housing. Patricroft Church and the adjacent Sunday school in Eccles have stood empty since the religious congregation vacated the premises in 2019.
Built between 1964 and 1975, the church and organ centre was once a thriving community hub, while the Sunday School has existed on the site since 1884 and is a registered local heritage site.
But the complex is now due to make way for new housing, if plans are approved by the town hall at a planning meeting on Thursday, April 30.
An agreement between Stanley Investments Ltd and housing association ForHousing could see a new block erected with 30 one and two-bedroom apartments, all for social rent.
There will also be 18 parking spaces including two blue bays, and cycle storage.

The homes are close to a number of local schools such as Godfrey Ermen Primary School and Beech Street Community Primary School, and is within walking distance of several shops and supermarkets.
In a Design and Access statement, MSPL Planning said on behalf of the developers: “The development has been designed to integrate well with the surrounding context while delivering much-needed homes. Importantly, the proposals will make a meaningful contribution to the local housing supply.”
The plans have encountered a small number of objections, with around ten neighbours raising concerns about parking, traffic, and the loss of another heritage building in the area. Some neighbours asked developers to consider incorporating the iconic facade of the church and Sunday school into their plans to honour the existing structure.
Planning officers say that ‘on balance, the loss of the church as a community facility is not considered to give rise to a significant adverse impact in this instance’ and have recommended the scheme for approval.
Salford councillors will discuss the plans on Thursday before making a final decision.
