The M60 motorway has partially reopened following a fatal incident at Barton Bridge earlier today — but significant disruption remains.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 9:40am after reports of a concern for welfare on the bridge. Police have since confirmed that a man sadly fell from the structure and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Clockwise lanes have now reopened to traffic, easing some congestion in the area. However, the anticlockwise carriageway remains closed between Winton and Trafford while emergency services continue their work and investigations at the scene.
The earlier full closure caused severe disruption across the network, with queues stretching for miles and delays of more than 25 minutes on top of normal journey times. Some motorists were left temporarily held within the closure, with traffic only now beginning to move more freely.
Knock-on congestion is still affecting surrounding routes including the M602, A57 and local roads through Eccles, Barton and Trafford Park, as drivers continue to divert away from the affected stretch.
Motorists are being advised to avoid the anticlockwise section where possible and allow extra time for journeys, particularly during peak periods.
Greater Manchester Police remain at the scene and enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
