MP Welcomes Council Decision on Peel Green Active Travel Scheme

The Deputy Chief Executive of Salford City Council has advised that the proposed Peel Green Active Travel scheme in the Peel Green area of Salford should not be approved. This recommendation comes following strong feedback from local residents in the Higher Irlam and Peel Green areas. The decision reflects the views of the community, which indicated that the current form of the scheme is not supported.

Michael Wheeler, MP for Worsley and Eccles, who has been working with residents alongside local councillors throughout the consultation process, welcomed the outcome. He said:

“In speaking with residents, it became clear that people were deeply concerned about the scheme, particularly the impact of HGV traffic along Liverpool Road, the challenges of accessing the motorway network, and the potential for additional congestion with negative environmental effects. These are issues that affect people’s everyday lives, how they get to work, go about their day, and thrive in their community. I have listened to residents and worked closely with local councillors to ensure these concerns were genuinely listened to and fully represented to Salford City Council. I welcome this recommendation and look forward to it being agreed next week.”

The council has indicated that discussions will continue with partners about improvements to local transport and road safety. This includes considering changes to weight limits, enhancing access to the motorway network, and implementing planned highway improvements already included in the conditions for Port Salford and Trafford Waters. Any future proposals for the Peel Green Active Travel scheme would be considered only when alternative access options are in place and the impact of HGVs along Liverpool Road has been addressed.

Michael Wheeler MP added:

“This shows what can be achieved when local residents, councillors, and their MP work together. I will continue to follow these matters closely and remain committed to listening to and representing our community on issues that affect their daily lives.”
