Sometimes young people get a bad name, labelled as trouble, a cause of anti-social behaviour, no respect, no future…
BUT we all know that for the majority of our young people, that will be the future, that simply is just NOT true!
Anyone who attended a fantastic Festival of Youth Music at the weekend would certainly vouch for that. Talented, polite, courageous and impressive. Just a few of the words to describe those young people that entertained and yes, even wowed an audience of their peers and older generations.
Cadishead Public Brass Band hosted the afternoon at Irlam Catholic Club with Cadishead Learner Band, Training Band and the students under the tutorship of ‘Baxterbeat’ Percussion, entertaining a very appreciative audience with solo drum sessions and brass instrument pieces, along with music from the two junior bands under the leadership of professional tutor Grace Harman, Cadishead Band’s outreach and education lead, a really enjoyable and entertaining afternoon.

Grace said, “We have players at Cadishead Band from the age of six to 83. Of all abilities and fully inclusive to anyone looking to learn, play and perform with Cadishead Public Band. I am so proud of the young musicians many of them from school in Irlam and Cadishead that took part in the festival. Well done to everyone.”
Jonny Baxter from Cadishead Band has been a professional percussionist for many years, he was in the resident dance band at Blackpool Tower Ballroom for several years, before joining Cunard’s QE2 as bandleader for a further three years then onto P & O Cruises for nine years onboard ship such as the Canberra, Oriana, Arcadia, Aurora and Oceana. Jonny has been teaching music in Cadishead and Irlam for more than 13 years now, also playing Festivals with Tribute Shows such as Elton John, Neil Diamond, Roy Orbison and Diana Ross. Heading up Cadishead Band’s Percussion section for the past 13 years he added, “Wow, the kids were just fantastic, some of the pieces they played were amazing, from ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ to ‘The Final Countdown’ they were brilliant! A masterclass showing that our young people are talented, focused and above all a credit to themselves”.
Dave Dee from Cadishead Band said, “A fantastic showcase of all that is good with our young people in Irlam and Cadishead and beyond. At Cadishead Band we are here to encourage anyone, of any age, of any ability to come along and have a go at playing an instrument. Next year we celebrate the Band’s 150th Anniversary and it is the young people, like those that were here today that are the future not only of our Band, but the whole community.”
Over £270 in donations were collected on the afternoon, the donations being used to fund the junior bands costs to perform at Lytham St Anns in July. Well done to everyone connected with Cadishead Public Band a total asset to Irlam and Cadishead and the wider Salford Community.
