Salford Residents are Invited to Help Shape Their Communities Through £40 Million Pride in Place Programme
Residents in Pendleton and Brookhouse & Peel Green are being encouraged to help shape the future of their neighbourhoods through a major community-led investment programme that will bring up to £40 million into Salford over the next decade.
The government-backed Pride in Place initiative will see Pendleton and Brookhouse & Peel Green each receive up to £20 million to spend on projects and improvements identified by local people. Rather than decisions being made nationally or by external organisations, residents will play a central role in deciding how the funding is used and what priorities should be addressed in their communities.
The programme aims to empower local people to develop long-term plans for their neighbourhoods, supporting projects that could include improvements to public spaces, community facilities, local events, environmental initiatives, youth activities, health and wellbeing programmes and measures to make communities safer and more connected.
At the heart of the initiative are two newly established Neighbourhood Boards, one for Pendleton and one for Brookhouse & Peel Green. The boards will bring together residents, businesses, community organisations and local stakeholders to identify priorities, oversee investment plans and ensure the funding delivers lasting benefits for local people.
The leadership of the boards is now in place, with Jenni Smith appointed as Chair of the Pendleton Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board. In Brookhouse & Peel Green, Jon Odukoya has been appointed Chair, supported by Andy Higgins as Vice-Chair. The appointments mark an important milestone as the programme moves from planning into delivery.
Salford CVS is providing independent support to establish the boards and ensure local voices are represented throughout the process. Working alongside Salford City Council and community partners, the organisation has helped create an open and inclusive approach designed to encourage participation from people of all backgrounds.
Speaking as part of a promotional video for the scheme, board members and community representatives highlighted the importance of putting local people at the centre of decision-making. They stressed that Pride in Place is not a traditional regeneration programme where priorities are set elsewhere, but a unique opportunity for residents themselves to decide what improvements matter most.
The video emphasises that local people know their communities best and should have a direct say in shaping their future. Residents are being encouraged to share ideas, attend engagement events and participate in conversations about how the funding can make the biggest difference over the next ten years.
Jenni Smith described the programme as a significant opportunity for Pendleton residents to influence meaningful change in their area, while Jon Odukoya highlighted the chance to build on the strengths already present within Brookhouse and Peel Green and ensure community voices remain at the heart of future developments.
People who live, work, volunteer or have strong connections to either area are being invited to get involved. Organisers say no previous experience is necessary, only a passion for the local community and a willingness to contribute ideas and perspectives that can help shape the future of the neighbourhood.
In Pendleton, the Neighbourhood Board will work closely with residents, local organisations, Salford City Council and local MP Rebecca Long-Bailey to develop a long-term vision for the area and oversee the delivery of projects funded through the programme.
The investment forms part of a wider government commitment to community-led regeneration and neighbourhood renewal. Supporters of the initiative believe it presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for residents to influence how significant investment is spent in their local area, creating improvements that reflect the needs and aspirations of the people who live there.
