After almost 50 years Dave Mather has decided to check out and call it a day after working at the Tesco Extra Store in Irlam since 1977, the same year that Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Silver Jubilee.

Dave started at the store at the age of 16, just a year after it first opened on Fairhills Road in Irlam. His main job has always been collecting and returning shopping trollies from around the car park but has also worked as a meet and greeter in the popular store. A fixture at the store, much liked by customers and fellow staff alike.

That earned him the affectionate nickname – Trolly Dave.

He said, “I am really going to miss the customers and the staff, many of whom are friends. But I certainly won’t miss the work, especially in the winter!”

Dave will now be able to spend more time gardening, walking and following his beloved Warrington Wolves Rugby League team.

He added, “It will also give me more time to take in more football matches and watching my best mate Liam’s son, who is currently playing at Morecambe FC. We will be celebrating soon with a get together with work mates and friends at the Red Lion in Hollins Green that I am really looking forward too.”

Store Manager Karen Shaul said, “Dave has always been a popular figure and part of the fixtures and fittings for many years, here at Tesco in Irlam. He will be greatly missed, and we wish him all the very best in his retirement.”
