A long-awaited upgrade for a Salford train station is finally due to begin next week. Moorside railway station in Swinton is due to receive a major makeover to improve accessibility for wheelchair users, and those with buggies or big luggage.

The first works are due to begin on June 8, with the main construction taking place from July 30. The upgrade will include a new passenger lift, a fully refurbished and accessible ticket office, improved lighting and CCTV, and new accessible toilet and baby changing facilities.

Residents in Eccles and Worsley have been told the train station will remain open and services will continue to run as normal. However, the ticket office will be shut between August to autumn 2026.

Commenting on the impending works online, Worsley and Eccles MP Michael Wheeler said:

“Residents in Worsley and Eccles may be aware of upcoming railway works near Swinton Station as part of a significant £4.3m accessibility upgrade. The project will make Swinton Station safer and more accessible for everyone, including disabled passengers, older residents, and those travelling with pushchairs, luggage or mobility needs.

“For residents living near the station, I know that when work like this begins close to home it can understandably cause concern about noise, disruption and how day-to-day journeys might be affected. I will continue to monitor the works closely and raise any issues on your behalf.”

The works are due to be completed by spring 2027.

The station was part of a GMCA bid to create ‘Access for All’ across all train stations in Greater Manchester. The project is supported by the Combined Authority’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement – a pot of money earmarked for public transport improvements.
