Michael Wheeler MP welcomes Government action to support households and businesses with fuel costs

Michael Wheeler MP - Worsley & Eccles

Michael Wheeler MP for Worsley & Eccles has welcomed new Government measures aimed at helping households, motorists and businesses manage fuel costs in response to rising global pressures linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

The announcement comes as international instability continues to affect global energy markets, with the Government stressing that a rapid de-escalation in the Middle East, including the reopening of key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, remains the most effective way to bring down fuel prices. The UK is continuing to play a leading role in international efforts to support the free flow of global trade and shipping.

Alongside this diplomatic work, the Government has set out further domestic measures designed to ease pressure on families and businesses already feeling the impact of higher fuel costs.

Michael Wheeler MP said:

“I know that rising fuel prices cause real pressure for families, commuters and local businesses here in Worsley & Eccles. Whether it is getting to work, running a small business or keeping goods moving across the country, these costs are felt in everyday life. That is why I welcome this package of support from Government at a time of global uncertainty.”

The package, worth over £400 million, builds on existing action already taken to keep fuel costs down. This includes the extension of the 5p per litre fuel duty cut and a freeze on fuel duty increases in line with inflation. The Government has also confirmed that petrol and diesel remain around 11p per litre cheaper than under previous plans, with fuel duty at its lowest level in over 16 years.

Further measures announced today include:

  • Extension of the 5p fuel duty cut until the end of 2026, helping to provide stability and saving the average motorist over £120 compared to previous plans.
  • Targeted support for red diesel users, including farmers and sectors such as maritime, fishing, and rail freight, with duty reduced by over a third to the lowest level in more than 20 years.
  • A 12-month Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) holiday for most HGVs, supporting the haulage sector and helping to reduce pressure on supply chains and the wider economy.

The Government has also highlighted wider support for motorists, including investment in electric vehicle grants and infrastructure, designed to give people more choice and help reduce long-term running costs.

Michael Wheeler MP added:

“While no single measure can fully insulate us from global instability, this package will make a real difference to households and businesses across our community. I will continue to stand up for local residents and small businesses in Worsley & Eccles, and ensure their voices are heard as the Government responds to ongoing pressures on the cost of living.”

Michael confirmed he will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with Ministers to ensure that families and businesses in Worsley & Eccles are supported through any further changes in global fuel markets.
